Quantification of actinide [alpha]-radiation damage in minerals and ceramics
Article Abstract:
[alpha]-Emitters, including plutonium and minor actinides, are found in nuclear waste and nuclear materials inventories around the world and the actinides that are separated from spent nuclear fuel should be immobilized within mineral-based ceramics. Experiments were performed to measure close to 5,000 atoms/[alpha] in radiation-damaged natural zircons, which reveal the long-term structural durability of actinide-containing ceramics.

Another continental pool in the terrestrial silicon cycle
Article Abstract:
Silicon isotopes of in situ quartz from a sandstone series in France, using a new-generation secondary Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy apparatus is analyzed. It is suggested that quartz re-precipitation plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycle of silicon.

Nuclear-reactor closure hits cancer tests
Article Abstract:
The article discusses the consequences of a sudden closure of the nuclear reactor owned by Atomic Energy Canada. The cancer and heart tests in the North American have been cancelled due to the shortage of medical isotopes following the shutdown.
